Wes Gordon

Wes Gordon

by Melissa Magsaysay

A True Force in Fashion, Wes Gordon is Taking the Legendary Carolina Herrera Brand into Fresh New Territory.

Since 1980, Carolina Herrera has been defining what it means for women to look timeless, elegant and sophisticated and above all, feel effortless and confident. Herrera herself embodies the aesthetic, wearing a ball gown with the same ease as her signature white button down and jeans.

After 38 years at the helm of her namesake label, Herrera stepped down and handed the reigns to Wes Gordon, a Midwest born, Central Saint Martins educated, young designer who had previously held positions at Oscar de la Renta and Tom Ford in addition to designing his own label.

Gordon has proved not only capable of upholding the bar set so high by Herrera but has evolved the look and energy of the brand to be modern and light while keeping the dna of the house intact. No small feat for any designer, but Gordon does not seem daunted. He has a penchant for bright color, feminine silhouettes and upbeat embellishments, which have become his signature in evolving the line. He injects a playful spirit into sophisticated clothing, loves a festive print and believes in size-inclusivity.

Carolina Herrera is now carried on 11 Honoré, with new styles being updated regularly.

Here, Gordon talks about the Carolina Hererra woman, dressing Lizzo and pushing boundaries in fashion.

Q & A with Wes Gordon

WHO TO YOU IS THE CAROLINA HERRERA WOMAN?

The Herrera woman is laughing, with her head thrown back, dancing on a chair and full of confidence: this is our woman. The boldness and vivaciousness of Herrera is not associated with any demographic but rather more about attitude and joie de vivre.

WHERE DO YOU GET MOST OF YOUR CREATIVE INSPIRATION?

Every weekend my husband, dog and I go to our farm in Roxbury, Connecticut. Stepping away from the chaos of the city, pausing, and clearing my head really sparks my creativity and allows my ideas to flow.

DO YOU FEEL THE FASHION WORLD IS MORE SIZE INCLUSIVE NOW THAN WHEN YOU BEGAN DESIGNING?

Absolutely. I still think there is work to be done but without question, tremendous progress has been made with gender identity, racial diversity although more work still needs to be made.

YOU'VE ALWAYS CREATED TIMELESS AND VERSATILE SILHOUETTES, WHAT INSPIRED YOUR DECISION TO BEGIN EXTENDING YOUR SIZING?

Nothing makes me happier than seeing a woman wearing Herrera and feeling beautiful, confident and fearless and 11 Honoré is a great platform to reach more women with this mission and grow our Herrera family. Recently, we created a look for Lizzo for her Saturday Night Live appearance from a SS20 look straight from the runway and I was thrilled to see her so happy and confident, as she always is, in a Carolina Herrera look.

WHAT MORE CAN THE INDUSTRY BE DOING TO MAKE FASHION MORE INCLUSIVE?

By questioning the rules – just because something had been done in the past doesn’t mean that’s the way going forward. Everyone in the industry or any industry has the responsibility to ask why and can we do this better.
