Q & A With Rachel

How do you describe your personal style?

My style is a mix of contemporary, trendy and classy. I tend to gravitate toward unique silhouettes, asymmetric and off shoulder styles are definitely some of my go-to’s! I love wearing items that not everyone else has and I can often be found in bright colors and patterns. It’s not uncommon to find a mix of high and low end pieces in my wardrobe. I love bold accessories like earrings or a good statement bag when my outfit calls for it! Basically, if I love it, feel great in it and it fits well, I will wear it.

Have you always been interested in fashion?

I wasn’t always technically always interested in fashion per se, but growing up I was very creative. My Aunt taught me how to sew at young age. We would go to the store together where I would select my favorite fabrics for our latest project. As I got a bit older, I spent a lot of my free time drawing and painting. However, it really wasn’t until much later when I signed as a curvy model in 2007, that my interest in fashion really peaked. Being behind the scenes as a runway and fit model for brands like Nordstrom and Macy’s, really opened my eyes. It was during that time I had an epiphany and realized I wanted to be in fashion. More specifically, I knew I wanted to design fashion forward pieces that the curvy market was missing. Once I left my job in legal and banking in Seattle, I moved to LA and pursued a second degree at FIDM. After graduation, I worked with some of the biggest names in fashion at WGSN, a trend forecasting service. Eventually, I started sharing more of my personal style which naturally lead to the creation of my blog, Lovely in LA. In addition to running my blog full time, I currently consult with brands on content creation, art direction and influencer campaigns. I guess you could say my interest in fashion has almost come full circle at this point.

Do you have a style mantra?

My style mantra starts with confidence and wearing what makes you feel good! If you rock your look with confidence, the rest falls into place. Know what works for you but don’t be afraid to step outside your box and experiment with colors, textures and silhouettes. Clothes are very powerful and it’s all about how I feel when I pull together a look. Along those lines, I always try to select pieces that fit my body well and accentuate my best features.

What inspires you creatively?

I gather inspiration from a variety of different places. Quite honestly, it’s different every day and living in Los Angeles definitely gives me a creative edge. There is an energy in the air here like nowhere else. The beautiful weather, the beaches, the desert and the interesting interactions I have with diverse people on a daily basis, all inspire me. Living in a neighborhood with some of the best restaurants, hotels and stores in LA that are heavily focused on experience and ambience definitely add to the mix (LaPeer Hotel and the Restoration Hardware Flagship store on Melrose are currently two of my favorites for just that reason). Of course there are always the more traditional channels like attending a fashion show, going to art galleries and spending time in nature. I am also very lucky to be surrounded by friends who are creative entrepreneurs because it unquestionably rubs off on you!
